Mobile Website- A mobile website is similar to any standard website, as it consists of browser-based HTML pages that are linked together and accessed over the Internet. The obvious characteristic that differentiate a mobile website from a standard website is the fact that it is designed for touch-screen and very small handheld display interface compared to standard websites. Mobile websites can also display text, data, images and video, like any other standard website.

Mobile App- A mobile app is a smartphone or tablet application. Apps are actual applications that are downloaded and installed on a mobile device, rather than being connected within a browser. Users visit device-specific portals like  Apple’s App Store, Android Market, or Blackberry App World in order to find and download apps for a particular operating system. The app may pull content and data from the Internet, in similar way like a website, or it may download the content so that it can be accessed without an Internet connection.

The primary advantage of a mobile website is that it makes other websites more accessible for mobile users. It have all the same elements as the regular website such as its look and feel, pages, images and other content, but it provides a mobile-friendly layout that offers improved readability and functionality when viewed on a smartphone or tablet. By having a mobile website, users can access any company website anytime, anywhere using any device, without compromising the user experience.

The mobile app functions a lot like a mobile website, but a mobile app gives businesses the advantage of having their own corner on a customer's device. As the users have to download and install the app, businesses have more control over their presence on a device than they would with a mobile website. Mobile apps make it easy to deploy programs and use mobile payments using a single platform. It's also much easier to access a mobile app than a mobile website as it takes is only one tap, versus have to open a Web browser, then type in a URL.

Which is Better- When we have to decide whether to build an app or a mobile website, the most appropriate choice basically depends on company’s end goals. If one is developing an interactive game, an app is probably going to be the best option. But if the goal is to provide mobile-friendly content to the largest possible audience then a mobile website may a better choice. A mobile website should be considered the first step in developing a mobile web presence, whereas an app is useful for developing an application for a very specific purpose that cannot be effectively accomplished via a web browser.
